The Jolly Boys

I took this picture while taking a stroll through downtown Amsterdam. The Jolly Boys were supposed to perform in the Melkweg in December, but couldn't travel due to heavy snowfall. Al that remains of the non-performance are a couple of old bills announcing an event that never took place.

Cartoon jeep

While I was waiting for my train back to Amsterdam, a freight train with some twenty jeeps passed by. Because they moved too fast for my little camera, they kind of look like cartoon jeeps in motion.

While I was on my way to an appointment with cartoonist Argibald, I took this shot of the city center of Utrecht. I interviewed Argibald for about two hours about his work. The article will be published in Het Parool next week.

Hester and I had some burgers in the Bekeerde Suster op de Nieuwmarkt this week. It's been a while since we saw each other. She's busy studying. She also went to South America a couple of months ago. Hester will probably publish her Spanish adventures on her blog any time soon.

Museum square as a living painting

Sunday I went to the Van Gogh museum. Although I am not a particular fan of Vincent's work, I did want to check out the exposition on naturalism in the arts. From within the building you get quite a view from the Museum Square, making the square a scene of a living painting by itself.

Slimer!

This is my friend Merel wearing a sweater with a print of Slimer on it. I love Slimer, it's one of the funniest animated characters ever and 'Ghostbusters' is still one of my favourite movies. Apparently they licensed stuff from Ghostbusters at H&M because they got a bunch of clothes referring to this movie. Though I am getting a bit to old to wear shirts like that, so you won't see me in a Slimer T-shirt anytime soon.

Mice beneath the restaurant table

Monday last week I had dinner with Paul, a good friend of mine and a cartoonist. Although not all of mine friends are into comic books or drawing comics, a lot of them are. Paul and I are avid comic book readers and naturally the books we had just bought at the ABC were one of the topics of our conversation. The mice that were running on the floor were another one. Apparently it's quite normal in Amsterdam to have mice walk between your feet when you're eating a hamburger. Tourists be warned. Makes one wonder what happens in the kitchen after all the lights are out. What has all of this to do with the picture above? Not much, except for the fact that it is the view from our table at the Beiaard.

While I was waiting for my friend Fee I had time to snap this picture at the Oudemanhuispoort of the University of Amsterdam. The coffee date with Fee would be the last one in a long while. She immigrated to Boston USA this Tuesday.

One of the old city walls in Maastricht. I like the contrast with the houses on the other side of the street. A lot of history in a relative small space.

It's never too late for Santa!

All right, so Xmas may be two weeks in the past already, but I figure we can all use a little Santa from time to time. And these guys seem to be twins, though one seems to be a little cross-eyed.

Old school architecture

I used to live in an old town in Noord-Holland, in a house from the 1600s. I still have a thing for old buildings and architecture.

Nice house in the snow

Walking through Maastricht on New Year's Day, we came across this little homestead. Although the snow in Amsterdam had practically melted, there was still some left in the south of Holland.

Last year's trash

For New Year's Eve, my girlfriend and I went to Maastricht. On the first day of the new year, traces of last year's festivities were still very visible.
