'De regering is crimineel'

Het is nog niet afgelopen

Potverdorie! En wederom laten de makers van Dexter ons met een mega cliffhanger achter. Dat betekent minstens negen maanden wachten voordat we weten hoe het afloopt. Maar goed, dat is de vloek van televisie: je raakt betrokken bij een groep personages, je leeft met ze mee en wil bovenal dat het goed met ze gaat. Dan komt er een enorme wending die alles op zijn kop gooit. In sommige series gebeurt dat zo vaak dat je het gevoel hebt in een droogtrommel met je wasje mee te draaien. Duizelig kun je ervan worden.

Dexter was de afgelopen weken bloedstollend spannend. En nu, na het zien van de laatste aflevering van seizoen zeven, wordt alles nog eens op zijn kop gezet. Dat het hier gaat om fictiefiguren doet niets aan de spanning af. Fictie is volgens sommigen een parallelle dimensie die bestaat naast de onze. En daarbij: is er in de geest een onderscheid te maken tussen de verhalen van televisieseries en de verhalen die we elkaar vertellen via Twitter, Facebook en blogs...

Hotly dreaming Dexter

Het gaat er maar heet aan toe in seizoen 7 van Dexter. Maar goed, psychopathische blondines zijn ook moeilijk te weerstaan. Zeker als ze worden gespeeld door charmante actrices als de Australische Yvonne Strahovski.

Debster

Ze kunnen 'Dexter' beter 'Debster' gaan noemen. Zij is in seizoen 7 de werkelijke ster van de show. Ik vind het vooral leuk op welke woordrijke manier ze haar emoties weet uit te drukken: 'Fuck, Jesus!'

Lou versus The Hulk

Gisteravond de aflevering 'King of the Beach' van The Incredible Hulk op YouTube gekeken. Een bijzondere aflevering omdat Lou Ferrigno, die de Hulk gestalte geeft in de serie, ook de rol van een jonge buidybuilder op zich neemt. Een sprekende rol nog wel en dat is extra bijzonder: het dove personage leerde zichzelf te praten. Net als Lou trouwens die ondanks zijn handicap toch een heel eind is gekomen. Hier staat Ferrigno tegenover zijn gigantische alter ego de Hulk.

Seinfeld

Daar hebbie Georgie van Seinfeld. Ongelooflijk eigenlijk dat ze die oude comedy's nog steeds uitzenden. Toch is het een goed geschreven sitcom, ware het niet dat die stand-up scenes waarin Seinfeld grappen maakt die thematisch bij de betreffende aflevering horen, eigenlijk helemaal niet grappig zijn.

Michael & Carey

Twee stills van de film 'Wall Street 2: Money Never Sleeps'. Een film die ik erg graag wilde zien omdat ik een groot fan ben van Michael Douglas. De laatste tijd maakt hij echter niet zulke heel goede films, dit is daar een mooi voorbeeld van. Pluspunt van dit vervolg van Oliver Stones klassieker 'Wall Street' is actrice Carey Mulligan. Ik kom haar de laatste tijd vaak tegen - op het witte scherm welteverstaan. Ze zit bijvoorbeeld ook in 'Drive' die ik recent zag. Goede en mooie actrice. Daar gaan we nog veel meer van horen voorspel ik. Minstens één oscar. Bovenstaande scéne is de meest aangrijpende: de vervreemde vader en dochter praten voor het eerst sinds jaren met elkaar en het ziet ernaar uit dat de toenaderingpoging van pa, Gordon Gekko, zijn vruchten gaat afwerpen.

Foo Fighters @ Pinkpop

Concerten. Ik beleef er niet veel. Niet live in ieder geval. Ja, ik ben wel eens in de Melkweg of Paradiso te vinden. Kleinere zalen, dicht op de band. Dat vind ik fijn. Zo massaal als het bij Pinkpop is, hoeft het voor mij niet. Pinkpop dus vanaf de bank, ofschoon ik niet veel gezien heb dit jaar. Wel heb ik het optreden van Foo Fighters bekeken. Goede band.

En opeens moest ik aan 'Alien' denken...

Liselotte @ the Filmmuseum

Yesterday morning I spent a couple of hours with Liselotte at Vertigo, the café at the Filmmuseum. Okay, so they call it the Eye institute now. I don't care: I don't like the name. It's been Filmmuseum for centuries, so to me it stays that way. Damn those marketing bureaus thinking up stupid names just because they might have international appeal.

But that's not what I wanted to talk about actually. Liselotte wrote a book on television design, 'Vorm van Vermaak' its called. The book comes out mid April. She wrote it with Roy van Vilsteren, the vice-editor in chief of the VARAgids. (A TV guide). I interviewed Roy last week for an article in the VPRO Gids (another broadcasting magazine I work for as a freelancer). Liselotte also runs a blog about the subject, which you can check out here.

After my coffee date with Liselotte I wrote an article about a new television programme about comic books, that's being taped at the moment and will be broadcasted in the fall. I phoned up Gert Jan Pos who wrote the scripts for the show. He appeared to be in Budapest of all places. He was nice enough to answer some questions while standing in the middle of the street somewhere.

I've known about the show for a couple of months now, and with news like this, it's always the question when to publish. Since a couple of comic book makers reported on their blog that they had been interviewed for the show, I felt the time was now to write up a short post on the subject. But lesson learned: next time I learn something I will write about it immediately.

At night, I planned to read a collection of Iron Man comics I've been anxious to get to in ages. But cabaret artist Lebbis was on the telly. Although I hadn't planned on watching the dude, what he said about modern life struck a cord and I laughed from the whole show. Lebbis talked about the fact that we are over-consuming and angrily yelled at all the bankers that caused the economical crisis but got away with it. The bastards are even getting bonuses again like nothing happened. He also had some funny stuff to say about horoscopes and frauds like Uri Geller, on which I couldn't agree more.

Last week I shot a making of the tv-programme 'Uitgesproken VARA', a current affairs programme. I took this shot about half an hour before the broadcasted live.

Sweeney Todd

I am a big Tim Burton fan, but hadn't seen 'Sweeney Todd' yet. Except for a few exceptions I don't like musicals, so I put off watching this flick until today. Can't say I particularly liked the singing. Loved the art direction, though the digital toolbox sort of presented the same London in Sherlock Holmes I recon. This is going to be one of the few Tim Burton films I probably will not watch a second time. Though, I didn't like what he did with Alice either. I am fonder of his old movies. Maybe he's lost his touch, or maybe I've just had enough of the same old, same old. Or maybe it is just time he starts to shoot an original script again and stop making all these adaptations.

Gothic

Saw the film 'Gothic' (Ken Russell, 1986) the other night. Story of the night that Mary Shelley gave birth to the horror classic 'Frankenstein.' Disturbed drug induced games are played and ghost stories are told one rainy night at the mad Lord Byron's country estate. Personal horrors are revealed and the madness of the evening runs from sexual fantasy to fiercest nightmare. Mary finds herself drawn into the sick world of her lover Shelley and cousin Claire as Byron leads them all down the dark paths of their souls.

A very theatrical, somewhat dated film. Interesting, though. And now I am curious about the original Frankenstein novel. So that's something I'll have to check out in the near future.

Psycho II

I've always been curious about the film Psycho II and finally got a chance to see this flick this week. I always wondered what the sequel to the classic Hitchcock-film would be like. I wasn't disappointed but hadn't expect much in the first place to be honest. In the end it got a bit silly, but it was nice to see a young and pretty stunning Meg Tilly in one of the lead roles.

Now declared legally sane, Norman Bates is released from a mental institution after spending 22 years in confinement over the protests of Marion Crane's sister Lila Loomis, who insists that he's still a killer and that the court's indifference to his victims by releasing him is a gross miscarriage of justice. Norman returns to his motel and the old Victorian mansion where his troubles started, and history predictably begins to repeat itself.

Sherlock Holmes

Saturday night I finally had the time to watch 'Sherlock Holmes'. The Guy Ritchie film from 2009, with Robert Downey jr. as the world's greatest detective. It wasn't exactly what I had expected and seems a bit removed from the original creation if you as me. The film was entertaining nonetheless, with beautiful vistas of London in the Victorian age. Though the scene at Tower Bridge looked rather digital to me.

The Last Man on Earth

Just watched the classic movie 'The Last Man on Earth'. Vincent Price stars in this akward Vampire picture based on the novel 'I am Legend'. When a disease turns all of humanity into the living dead, sort of a cross between vampires and zombies, the last man on earth becomes a reluctant vampire hunter.

Cruella de Bruijn

Last night I was watching the Madiwodovrijdagshow. Athlete Inge de Bruijn was one of the guests. Once upon a time she swam a lot and apparently was quite good at it: she's won some Olympic medals and stuff. I am not really into sports, so what do I know. I do know that nowadays so spends her time modelling. Anyway, while watching the screen as she got interviewed, I couldn't help noticing that she looked a bit like Cruella de Vil, but than the glossy Prada version. Maybe she's related to the character...

Salem's Lot

I can't get enough of these old vampire movies. These images are from Salem's Lot, a 1979 miniseries based on a Stephen King novel - whatelse could it be based on but the writings of one of the greatest current master's of horror. I saw the series this week. David Soul in a starring role. If you are able to ignore the 70's fashion and terrible haircuts and like a slow paced story, this one is a treat. I had fun with it.

By the way: the bottom shot shows Bonnie Bedelia as Susan Norton, who's just about to take a bite out of David Soul. Maybe you know her better as Miss McClane from the Die Hard movies. Vampires die hard indeed.
